Tribute To The Bee Gees Fort Lauderdale Concert reviews
Squeeze- Spectacular
In 2002, we were treated to three shows in three nights in Denver, CO Springs, and Boulder. It had been quite a while since Tribute To The Bee Gees's last show in Denver in '93 for the SFP tour, and Glenn hadn't performed live since his appearance on a radio show for eTown in Boulder in 2003. So it was satisfying to have my Glenn/Squeeze craving satisfied. The setlist is provided below, with just a few changes in the order. I only realized after returning home that every track from Singles 45 and Under had been played. The rendition of Annie and Slap & Tickle was particularly impressive. Glenn exuded his usual lively persona, taking the spotlight in a sharp brown pinstripe suit with a blue t-shirt underneath, white Pat Boone shoes, and a slightly stubbled face. His vocals were fantastic, as was his guitar playing, which is to be expected from Glenn. Chris appeared somewhat mechanical. While Bentley occasionally strolled across the stage for some interaction, Chris seemed disinterested. Before performing Someone Else's Heart (another standout), Chris mentioned that he had listened to recordings of old live gigs and singled out the Ogden show in '93 as a standout performance. A couple of b-sides from that show were also included. Not having seen The Fluffers perform live before, it was my first introduction to Stephen and Simon. Simon displayed a solid performance, reminiscent of the Lavis style—strong but not overly flashy. Stephen's playing was adequate but not particularly exceptional. The harmonized backing vocals from the entire band were a delight. John and Glenn harmonized beautifully on the verses of Someone Else's Heart when Chris was not singing. John's last visit to Denver dated back to the East Side tour in the 1980s at The Rainbow, which has now been replaced by a Walgreen's store. I had the chance to express my appreciation for Glenn's recent work, including Bing and PE. Highlights for me were Hope Fell Down and If It's Love. There was an elderly Filipino man who was acquainted with Glenn's father in London, and Glenn warmly engaged with him. The man repeatedly remarked on Glenn's resemblance to his father, prompting Glenn to comment, "that's something my dad would say." Interestingly, the man mistook Chris for Glenn as Chris was the first to emerge from the dressing room. The experience left me reflecting on the old 3 Degrees song, "When Will I See You Again?" I look forward to attending another Glenn or Tribute To The Bee Gees show in the future to avoid such prolonged breaks.
